WEST HARTFORD, CT. – After struggling in recent NESCAC matches, the Amherst College volleyball team bounced back this afternoon by sweeping two out-of-conference opponents, Mount St. Mary College and the University of Hartford, in 3-0 victories.
The Mammoths will play their next match against another out-of-conference opponent, Westfield State University, at home next week on Tuesday.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
vs. Mount St. Mary College
*After Mount St. Mary built an early 11-5 advantage over Amherst, the team rallied behind kills from
Gabrielle Hines,
Raegan Lentz, and
Ellie Myers, coming within 1 point at 14-13. Mount St. Mary pulled ahead again to a late 21-15 advantage, but the Mammoths mounted another come back behind kills from Hines and
Addison Lau. Amherst finished set one with a tight 26-24 victory.
*Mount St. Mary and Amherst remained close throughout second set. With the score tied at 18-18, the Mammoths finally began to create some separation. An
Addison Lau service ace started the run, and consecutive kills from
Bailey Reid and
Abby Nichols finished off the run, securing a 25-20 victory for Amherst.
*Amherst took an early 9-4 lead over Mount St. Mary in the third set. Multiple service aces from
Eleanor Jones ignited the Mammoths, allowing them to surge ahead more, gaining a 14-4 advantage. Although Mount St. Mary attempted to rally, kills from
Raegan Lentz,
Abby Nichols,
Sofia Camilo, and
Bailey Reid helped secure a 25-21 victory, completing the sweep.
vs. University of Hartford
*Similar to Mount St. Mary, Hartford also built an early advantage over Amherst in the first set. With a 6-1 Hartford lead, Amherst responded behind two service aces from
Liliana Brandt, pulling within one point. Amherst gained a point advantage over Hartford at 15-14 later in the match. Behind blocks from
Raegan Lentz,
Sofia Camilo, and
Tiana Richardson along with a Camilo kill, Amherst pushed its lead to 21-14. Although Hartford fought back, Amherst closed the match victorious at 25-21.
*The second set was back and forth between the two teams. With the score tied at 13, Hartford initially pulled ahead to 16-13, but Amherst responded behind kills from
Addison Lau and
Ellie Myers, eventually gaining a 18-16 lead. A
Tiana Richardson kill eventually put the Mammoths at set point, and
Sofia Camilo provided another kills to finish with a 25-21 victory.
*The two teams remained close during the first part of the third set. With the score favoring Amherst at 12-10, the Mammoths took off behind serves from
Judith Subirats-Bosch and several attack errors from Hartford. With the lead at 17-10, consecutive kills from
Tiana Richardson helped stretch the advantage to 20-12. Hartford fought back late to cut the deficit, but Amherst finished off with a 25-19 victory, completing the double-match sweep on the day.
