Andre Zhang wins Medalist Honors at Duke Nelson Invitational; Mammoths Finish Tied for 3rd

MIDDLEBURY, VT. -- The Amherst College men's golf team competed in Day 2 of the Duke Nelson Invitational Sunday at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course hosted by Middlebury College and took home a third-place finish.

After an early 9 a.m. shotgun start, the Mammoths competed in harsh wind and rain conditions. The team climbed the leaderboard and finished tied for 3rd place with Tufts University. For day 2 the Mammoths shot 300, or 16 over par, bringing them to a two day total of 35 over par. Winning the tournament as a team, Middlebury College finished with a two day total to 26 over par.

On the individual leaderboard, junior Andre Zhang led the Mammoths and won the tournament individually out of 104 players! For day 2, Zhang fired a 70, or one under par (the course is a par 71). Zhang won with a two-day total of 1 over par, and finished with a one shot lead over a Tufts player.

Following Zhang, senior Rhys Burgess fired a 75, or 4 over par, for day 2 and began his round strong with a birdie. Burgess finished with a two-day total of 11 over par, and finished T-21 individually. Sophomore Thomas Zhang shot a 76 for the day, and tied for 21st place with Burgess with a two day total of 11 over par. Freshman Andrew Xu shot 79 for the day, and finished with a two day total of 19 over par. Freshman Charlie Perkins shot 80 for day 2, and finished with a two day total of 13 over par.

The Mammoths overall finished strong with Zhang's individual win, and a team T-3 finish. Next weekend the Mammoths compete at Taconic Golf Club hosted by Williams College and hope to keep competing strong.
