BOSTON, Mass. – The Mammoths bounced back in their fourth match of the year after falling to Springfield earlier this week. The Amherst College volleyball team beat the Rochester Institute of Technology in a dominant 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-22, 25-12) at the Clark Athletic Center.
The victory brings the team's record to 2-2.
Amherst will continue its campaign tomorrow at the UMass Boston Tournament against Plattsburg State at 1:30 PM, followed by a 6:30 PM match against UMass Boston.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
*In set one, RIT gained an early 6-0 lead, forcing Amherst to chip away at a large deficit during the first part of the math. With kills from Abby Nichols, Gabrielle Hines, and Sofia Camilo, the Mammoths cut the RIT lead to 14-11. The team finally evened the score at 18-18, and the Mammoths took control of the match. A 6-0 run capped off by a Stella Jacey service ace secured an Amherst victory, 25-20.
*Similar to set one, the Tigers built an early advantage in second two, leading 13-7 midway through the match. After going up 22-16, it seemed like RIT would pull away, but the Mammoths rallied, sparked by a kill from Chloe Mensah. A strong team performance, led by serves from Tiana Richardson, would allow the Mammoths to score nine straight points, and claim a 25-22 victory.
*Amherst took control in the third set much earlier. Gaining an early advantage of 10-4, behind two service aces from Liliana Brandt, the Mammoths were dominant throughout the rest of the match. Two resounding Tiana Richardson kills secured an Amherst 25-12 victory over RIT in the third set.
BY THE NUMBERS
*Senior Tiana Richardson and Juniors, Sofia Camilo and Abby Nichols, led the team with 6 kills each.
*Junior Abby Nichols led the team with 2 block assists, and Camilo and Hines added one each. Freshman Reagan Lentz recorded a solo block.
*Sophomore Judith Subirats-Bosch led Amherst with 16 assists, and Freshman Liliana Brandt added 11.
