BOSTON, Mass. – The Mammoths continued their campaign at the UMass Boston Tournament today, facing off against Plattsburgh State and UMass Boston. Building on yesterday's momentum, the team swept the Cardinals 3-0 and won a heavily contested match against UMass, 3-2.
The Amherst volleyball team will start in-conference play next week at home versus Middlebury College on Friday at 7 p.m..
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
vs. Plattsburgh State University of New York
*The Mammoths came out strong in the first set, behind three consecutive aces from
Stella Jacey, building an early 5-1 advantage. The team showed no signs of slowing down during the opening set, surging ahead with leads of 11-3 and 17-8, until finally closing out the match victorious 25-12.
*Plattsburgh showed more signs of life in the second set, gaining a 16-14 advantage over Amherst midway through the match. An
Ellie Myers' kill and
Tiana Richardson's service ace helped the Mammoths go up 17-16. The teams continued to go back and forth until a Reagan Lentz kill and a Plattsburgh attack error secured an Amherst victory, 25-23.
*Amherst and Plattsburg also remained close early in the third set, battling to a 9-9 tie. The momentum turned after a 5-0 Amherst run, led by two service aces from
Judith Subirats-Bosch. The Mammoths remained in control for the rest of the match, finishing with a 25-19 victory.
vs. University of Massachusetts Boston
*The opening set between Amherst and UMass Boston was close throughout the match. UMass went on an early 5-0 run to go up 15-10, but Amherst battled back. Kills from
Tiana Richardson and Reagan Lentz allowed the Mammoths to come within striking distance, losing only 23-21. However, UMass closed out the match, winning 25-23.
*Similar to the first, the second set remained close throughout. The match eventually reached a tie at 17-17, and Amherst put on a strong showing, led by kills from
Gabrielle Hines,
Abby Nichols, and Reagan Lentz, to win 25-22.
*Another contested battle between Amherst and UMass began in the third set. The Mammoths trailed early 15-6, before going on a run led by kills from
Abby Nichols and Reagan Lentz to cut into the UMass lead. Behind three
Naima Cho-Khaliq service aces, Amherst surged ahead late, gaining a 22-2 lead. However, the Beacons closed out the match strong, escaping with a 25-23 victory.
*On the the brink of defeat, Amherst started the fourth match off with a 4-point run, led by a
Sofia Camilo kill and a
Judith Subirats-Bosch service ace. UMass rallied, cutting into the Amherst lead, but the Mammoths maintained control towards the end, closing out the match with kills from Reagan Lentz and
Gabrielle Hines.
*With the match on the line, Amherst and UMass Boston engaged in another back-and-forth set. UMass took an early lead, 8-3, putting Amherst in a tough spot.
The Mammoths rallied with a 7-2 run, highlighted by kills from
Gabrielle Hines and
Chloe Mensah. With the score tied at 10-10, the Mammoths and Beacons battled to another tie at 15-15. Kills from
Gabrielle Hines and Reagan Lentz closed out the match, securing an Amherst victory 17-15.
