Amherst men fall to #4 Jumbos in the NESCAC semifinal battle, 4-1

MIDDLETOWN, CT. — The #17 Amherst College men's tennis team fell 4–1 to No. 4 Tufts in the NESCAC semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Wesleyan University's indoor courts, with rain forcing the match inside. Amherst took the No. 1 doubles match but Tufts won the doubles point overall, then the Jumbos controlled most of singles while Amherst's record for the season fell to 13–6.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Amherst's best start came at No. 1 doubles, where Lukas Frangenberg and Andreas Sillaste beat Tufts 6–4. Tufts won the other two doubles courts to secure the opening point, including a 6–2 win at No. 2 and a 6–4 win at No. 3.
  • In singles, Amherst got its lone point from Andreas Sillaste, who beat Javier Gonzalez 6–3, 6–4 at No. 1.
  • The most exciting match of the afternoon came at No. 4, where Aldiyar Abzhan pushed Tufts' Garv Bahl all the way to a 12–10 second-set tiebreak before Bahl finished the match for Tufts.
  • Tufts also won at No. 2 singles and got the team-clinching point from the middle of the lineup. Amherst was still competitive in the unfinished matches, with Lukas Frangenberg down 4–5 in the first set at No. 3 and Rex Harrison trailing 2–3 in the first set at No. 5 when play stopped.

1. Andreas Sillaste (A) def. Javier Gonzalez (T), 6–3, 6–4.
2. Alex Ganchev (T) def. George Chaidemenos (A), 6–4, 6–1.
3. Lukas Frangenberg (A) vs. Andrej Djokic (T), unfinished, 4–5.
4. Garv Bahl (T) def. Aldiyar Abzhan (A), 6–4, 7–6(10–12).
5. Sacha Maes (T) vs. Rex Harrison (A), unfinished, 3–2.
6. Kaetan Mehta (T) def. Albert Hu (A), 6–4, 6–2.

UP NEXT

Amherst's record now holds at 13–6 and will hear about NCAA tournament selection on Monday afternoon. The Mammoths leave the NESCAC tournament with another postseason run and a strong result in the top half of the lineup, even if Tufts handled the final margin.
