8-Run First Leads Mammoths to 13-4 win over Lasell

AMHERST, Mass. -- It was over before it started.

No, not really of course, but it was close enough to that as the Amherst College baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday en route to an 13-4 victory over Lasell University in front of a crowd of 119 at Memorial Field.

The win moved the Mammoths to 15-5 on the season while the Lasers slipped to 11-12. Amherst is back at Memorial on Wednesday, hosting Brandeis University at 4 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The eight runs in the first came on only four hits as the Mammoths parlayed those with four walks, two hit batsmen and one Laser error.

* Sophomore lead-off batter Aiden Dubetsky would lead off the frame with a single and finish the inning 2 for 2. Leo Foust worked a walk and Tyler McCord reached on an error that loaded the bases. Zander Carnahan was it by a pitch to force in the first run before Jackson Boyer walked on four straight pitches for a 2-0 lead. Matthew Chen then smoked a liner down the into the left field corner that cleared the bases for a three-run double and a 5-0 lead.

* After an out, Ben Smith was hit by a pitch. Carson Ames singled to re-load the bases and Dubetsky then laced an RBI-single through the right side for a 6-0 lead. Foust's sacrifice fly scored Smith and Ames scored on a wild pitch for the 8-0 lead.

* The Mammoths made it 9-0 in the second when Chen led off with a double into the left-center field gap and scored on Ames' sac fly. The hometowners added three more in the third for a 12-0 lead courtesy of Jack Darcy's three-run, bases-clearing double down the left-field line.

* Weslley Oliveira Jr. was the benefactor of such run support, and put it to good use, throwing his longest outing of the season with five solid innings. He allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out three and giving up two runs. Christian Pedro would come on to earn a four-inning save, his first, striking out an impressive eight.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst had 11 hits in the win. Dubetsky was 3 for 6 with an RBI and run scored. Chen was 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI. Carnahan was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
