Wick’s 8-Point Day Sparks Mammoths’ Comeback Win Over Colby, 11-10

AMHERST, Mass. Down early and searching for a spark, the Amherst College men's lacrosse team turned Saturday into a full-on comeback statement, erasing a three-goal halftime deficit and surviving a frantic fourth quarter to beat Colby, 11-10, at Gooding Field.

Colby sprinted out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter, scoring four times in the opening 4:19 and forcing Amherst to chase from the start. Amherst settled in behind a surge of pressure shots and second-chance possessions, with Michael Li putting the Mammoths on the board at 7:36 (assist Ben Wick).

The Mammoths kept chipping away in the second. Matthew Sheinberg scored at 14:04 (assist Wick), and after Colby pushed it to 6-2, Amherst answered with goals from Bob Gross (5:11, assist Wick) and Wick (2:29, assist Gross) to cut the margin to 6-4. Colby grabbed a late goal at 0:12 to take a 7-4 lead into halftime, but the momentum had started to tilt.

The third quarter is where Amherst took over. The Mammoths pitched a 5-0 period and flipped the game in less than 15 minutes; Wick scored twice in 51 seconds (14:23 and 13:32, both assisted by Brendan Reilly); Bennett Chow tied it at 11:42 (assist Willie Doyle); and Wick's fourth of the day at 6:45 (assist Doyle) gave Amherst its first lead since 1-0. Amherst carried a 9-7 advantage into the fourth after Alex Vlacich scored late in the third at 1:20 (assist Wick).

Colby refused to fold in the final period, scoring three times to tie the game 10-10 by the 6:23 mark. Amherst didn't panic. After Vlacich extended the lead to 10-7 early in the fourth at 10:16 (assist Chow), the Mammoths absorbed the tying punch, then found the winner when Gross finished at 1:58 (assist Chow) to put Amherst back in front for good.

Wick was the engine throughout, finishing with four goals and four assists for eight points. Gross added two goals and an assist, Vlacich scored two, and Chow chipped in one goal and two assists as Amherst's offense steadily wore Colby down. In goal, Brooks Catlin delivered 12 saves to anchor the rally.
