Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Fast Start Fuels Mammoths to 11-8 Win at Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Amherst men's lacrosse controlled the game from the opening whistle Wednesday, built a 7-1 halftime lead, and then absorbed a fourth-quarter surge to secure an 11-8 win over Connecticut College today.

The Mammoths set the tone immediately with a 4-0 first quarter, striking four times while holding Conn scoreless for the opening 15 minutes. Bennett Chow ignited the start with two goals (10:59, 8:21), with Alex Vlacich setting up the second, before Sam Schafer (9:59) and Brendan Reilly (0:56) capped the early blitz.

Conn broke through six seconds into the second quarter, but Amherst answered right back to keep the game firmly in hand. Nate Cootauco responded at 0:38, then Amherst extended the cushion with Bob Gross (4:35, assist Reilly) and Ben Wick (9:02, assist Willie Doyle) to take a 7-1 advantage into the break. Even as Conn began to find more rhythm offensively, Amherst continued to control key possessions, winning faceoffs and stringing together stops behind Brooks Catlin in goal.

After the Camels found a goal early in the third, Amherst steadied the game with another response. Wick finished again at 2:47 (assist Max Youssefnia), keeping Amherst comfortably in front heading into the final period.

Connecticut College made its biggest push in the fourth, scoring quickly to cut into the lead and later trimming it to 10-8, but Amherst never let the momentum fully flip. The Mammoths delivered the defining punches of the night when Chow scored at 13:07, Doyle buried a man-up finish at 11:27 (assist Reilly), and Nico Berger wrapped up the win with a goal at 0:01 to close it out.

Amherst finished with a 43-37 edge in shots and won the faceoff battle 13-8, helping the Mammoths dictate the early tempo and build the cushion that carried them through the late Conn rally.
