AMHERST FALLS TO MIDDLEBURY AT HOME, 3-4

AMHERST, MA. — The #16 Amherst College men's tennis team came up just short in a 4–3 battle against #21 Middlebury on Saturday at the Amherst Tennis Courts, falling to 8–5 overall and 5–3 in NESCAC play. Amherst took the doubles point in convincing fashion after strong wins at #1 and #3, but Middlebury rallied in singles to edge out the Mammoths in what was a tight match from start to finish.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Amherst made an immediate statement in doubles, with Andreas Sillaste and Lukas Frangenberg rolling to a 6–0 win at #1 to help secure the early lead. Albert Hu and Ronald Gualario added a 6–4 win at #3, giving Amherst the doubles point before the singles kicked off.
  • In singles, George Chaidemenos delivered one of Amherst's best results of the day, winning a straight-set battle at #2 over Noah Lewis, 6–4, 6–1. 
  • Aldiyar Abzhan picked up a crucial win at #4, defeating Reif Larsen in straight sets, 6–1, 7–5, while Hugh Hentschel won a tight three-setter at #5 and Anand Sahasrabudhe also went three sets at #6 before Amherst fell just short overall. Middlebury took the remaining courts to complete the comeback and escape with the 4–3 win.

Amherst turns right around for another marquee NESCAC matchup, hosting Little Three rival Williams on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Mammoths will look to bounce back quickly after Saturday's narrow loss and close the weekend with a major conference win.
