Mammoths roll to 24-7 win over Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Jackson Boyer had four hits and four RBIs and Charlie LaFreniere added three hits and five RBIs Friday afternoon as the Amherst College baseball team rode not one but two double-digit innings to a 24-7 win over Little 3 and NESCAC West Division rival Williams College at the Ephs' Bobby Coombs Field.

Amherst improved ti 18-8 overall and 4-3 in the division while Williams fell to 8-16 overall and 2-5 in the NESCAC. The two teams meet again tomorrow, this time on Memorial Field in Amherst, for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The first three batters of the game -- Boyer, Leo Foust and Tyler McCord, all singled to load the bases. LaFreniere worked a walk to force home Boyer with the first run. Zander Carnahan followed by looping a flare to right that fell for an RBI-single. Jack Darcy then drew another walk that forced home McCord for a 3-0 lead. LaFreniere then scored on a wild pitch. Aiden Dubetsky dropped a shallow fly into center field for an RBI-single and five-run lead. Ben Smith then executed a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with one out. Carson Ames beat out a slow roller to third to re-load the bases and Boyer then drove a ball to deep straightaway center that landed on the warning track and scored two more runs. Ames scored on a Foust grounder and McCord delivered Boyer home with a hot shot back through the box for an RBI-single. McCord stole second, reached third on an error and scored on a grounder/error off the bat of LaFreniere.

* Williams closed to as close as 13-7 at one point, but a 10-run top of the fourth put the game away for the Mammoths. McCord had a two-run double in the outburst and Ames a two-run single to right. LaFreniere capped the uprising with a two-run single to right for a 23-7 lead.

* Sophomore Nick Fassert had to work around four errors and one walk but was strong through the end, throwing 100 pitches over a complete-game, seven-inning effort. He allowed 10 hits and 7 runs, only 3 earned, while walking 1 and striking out 4. He retired seven straight at one point and got some help from McCord, who made a nice diving snag of a line drive, and Boyer, who threw out a runner at the plate. Fassert improved to 3-1 on the season.
