AMHERST, Mass. — The Amherst College baseball team used a four-run fifth inning to take the opener, but Williams answered with 11 hits in the nightcap to earn a split Saturday at Memorial Field.
Amherst moved to 19-9 on the season overall, 5-4 in divisional play, while the Ephs are now 9-17 and 3-6. The Mammoths travel to take on Trinity Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
Game 1: Amherst 7, Williams 1
* Amherst right-hander
Saahi Jetti held Williams to one run on four hits over seven innings, striking out eight as the Mammoths won the opener 7–1. He improved to 6-1 on the season.
* Amherst broke the game open with a four-run fifth, extending a 2–1 lead and ending the day for Williams starter Peyton Rose, who allowed seven runs (seven earned) in 5.1 innings.
* Down 1-0, the Mammoths scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Charlie LaFreniere opened the frame with a basehit and
Zander Carnahan followed with another single.
Jack Darcy scored LaFreniere with another safety to tie the game and sophomore
Hudson Fulcher-Melendy gave Amherst the lead with a single back up the midde that scored Carnahan.
* In the Amherst fifth, the inning opened with
Jackson Boyer getting plunked by a pitch and subsequently stealing second.
Leo Foust singled and stole second. With one out, LaFreniere was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Jack Darcy singled to shortstop to score Boyer and Foust scored on an ensuing error.
Aiden Dubetsky then singled home the final run for a 6-1 lead.
* Williams' lone run came in the second, when Oliver Rey walked, stole two bases, and scored on a groundout. Quinn Carlesimo doubled, but the Ephs stranded six and did not advance another runner past second.
* Amherst had 10 hits in the win. LaFreniere was 2 for 2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Darcy was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Fulcher-Melendy was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Foust was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
Game 2: Williams 6, Amherst 3
* Williams rebounded in the nightcap behind a three-hit, three-RBI performance from Will Scott and seven strong innings from Matt Keene, earning a 6–3 win. Keene allowed just four hits and three earned runs, while Lucas Asanovic recorded the final six outs, striking out three.
* Boyer gave the Mammoths a 1-0 lead in the first when e led off with a single, stole second and took third on an error, then scored on Foust's groundout. Down 2-1, the Mammoths scored once in the fifth on a Foust sacrifice fly to tie the game, 2-2.
* Williams scored twice in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.
Matt Tabet took the loss for the Mammoths.
