MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Amherst College baseball team dropped a key twinbill to Little 3 and NESCAC West Division rival Wesleyan Sunday, losing game one 8-7 and dropping the nightcap, 9-4.
The double dip drops Amherst to 11-4 overall, 1-2 in the NESCAC West. The Mammoths are scheduled to host WPI Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Game 1, Wesleyan 8, Amherst 7, 7 inn.
* Scheduled for 7 innings, the Mammoths led 7-4 with two outs and a runner on first base in the bottom of the seventh before the wheels came off and the Cardinals rallied for four runs to to win 8-7. Matthew DeBenedictis' two-out, two-run single to left off Mammoth reliever
Matt Tabet provided the winning runs for Wesleyan.
* Down 2-0 after four innings, Amherst rallied for two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. In the fifth,
J.J. Grimes drew a lead-off walk and
Carson Ames doubled. An error allowed one run to score, and
Leo Foust plated Ames with the run via a groundout. In the sixth,
Jackson Boyer's RBI-double gave Amherst a 3-2 lead. Grimes drew another wak and Ames singled to load the bases.
Aiden Dubetsky was hit by a pitch to force home Boyer, and Foust's run-scoring grounder plated Grimes for a 5-2 lead,
* Amherst had seven hits in the loss. Ames was 2 fo 4, and Grimes went 1 for 2 with 2 walks.
Game 2, Wesleyan 9, Amherst 4
* Amherst scored three times in the top of the second for a 3-0 lead. Boyer smacked a two-run double and scored on an error.
* Wesleyan rallied for two in the second and two in the third to take the lead.
* Amherst tied it 4-4 in the top of the sixth but Wesleyan would answer with one in its half and then plate three in the seventh and one in the eighth to account for the final score.
