AMHERST, Mass. -- Seven different Mammoths had two hits Wednesday as the Amherst College baseball team cruised to a 10-2 win over regional rival Springfield College at Memorial Field.
With the win Amherst improved to 12-4 on the season while the Pride fell to 13-6 overall. The Mammoths will next play at Middlebury Friday at 4 p.m. in te first game of a three-game series at their NESCAC West Division rivals.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Michael Lapere ripped an RBI-single. Amherst tied it in its half of the frame.
Jackson Boyer led off with a single to second and reached second when
Leo Foust was safe on an error. A fielder's choice put runners on first and third with one out and
Justin Orridge picked up an RBI when he beat out a grounder to the shortstop hole for an RBI-single.
* The Mammoths trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the fourth but back to back singles by Charlie LaFreneier and
Zander Carnahan to open the inning ignited a three-run rally that gave Amherst the lead for good.
Aiden Dubetsky tied the game by lining an RBI-double to right and, with two outs, Boyer snapped the tie with a two-run single to center field for a 4-2 Amherst lead.
* Two runs in the bottom of the seventh and three in the eighth helped Amherst pull away for the 10-2 win. In the 7th,
J.J. Grimes had a two-out double to left to score Orridge and Dubetsky followed with an RBI-single to score Grimes for a 7-2 lead.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Seven different Mammoths took the bump in the win. First-year
Kai MacQuiddy earned his first collegiate win with two scoreless innings. He did not allow a hit, walked one and fanned three.
Walker Dellinger,
Adrian Caron,
Matt Tabet and Dubetsky each threw one scoreless frame.
* Dubetsky was 2 for 3 with two walks and two RBI in the win. Orridge was also 2 for 3 with two walks and he ad a single RBI while scoring twice.
