Six-Run First Propels Mammoths past Wesleyan, 14-4

AMHERST, Mass. -- A six-run first inning was more than enough for the Amherst College baseball team Friday as the Mammoths toppled Little 3 and NESCAC West rival Wesleyan, 14-4 in a mercy-rule shortened 7 innings at Memorial Field.

The win moved the Mammoths to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in NESCAC West Division play. Wesleyan fell to 4-11 and 0-1. The two teams are off Saturday but will meet Sunday in Middletown, Conn. for a twinbill beginning at 12 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Down 2-0 after a half-inning, Leo Foust got things started in the Mammoths' half of the inning when he was hit by a pitch with one out. Tyler McCord drew a walk and Justin Orridge grounded a single through the right side of the infield to score Foust. With two outs, an errant pick-off throw to first allowed McCord to score the tying run. Zander Carnahan then drove an opposite-field liner to right that went for an RBI-double that scored Orridge for a 3-2 lead. Jackson Boyer worked a walk and Ben Smith followed with a sizzling grounder over the third base bag for an RBI-double. Carson Ames capped the uprising with a two-run single into right field for a 6-2 Amherst lead after one.

* Sacrifice flies by Charlie LaFreniere in the second and Ames in the third made it 8-2 Amherst, and a three-run fourth put the game out of reach. Carnahan had a RBI-single and Boyer capped the frame with a two-run double to left for an 11-2 lead.

* Sophomore righty Nick Fassert earned the win, going the first five innings. He allowed four hits and three runs, two earned, while walking five and striking out two to improve to 2-0 on the season.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst banged out 13 hits over six innings at the dish.  Ames went 2 for 2 with 5 RBIs, a walk and run scored. Boyer went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Carnahan was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Orridge and Foust were each 2 for 4.
