AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore
Leo Foust's 2-out, 2-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning erased a one-run deficit and lifted the Amherst College baseball team to a stunning 5-4 victory over Western New England University in the Mammoths' home opener at Memorial Field Wednesday.
It was the sixth straight victory for Amherst, which improved to 10-2 on the season. The Mammoths host Wesleyan Friday at 4 p.m. in the first game of three with the Cardinals this weekend. The Golden Bears slipped to 7-8.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Aiden Dubetsky reached an error, took second on a wild pitch and third on a Foust single.
Tyler McCord hit into a double play, but Dubetsky scored.Â
* WNEÂ scored three times in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Amherst got one back in its half when
Justin Orridge led off with a single and came around to scored on a
Zander Carnahan groundout to make it 4-2.
* Amherst scored a single run in the sixth to make it 4-3.
J.J. Grimes and
Jackson Boyer singled and moved up on a wild pitch.
Carson Ames scored Grimes with a grounder to shortstop.Â
* In the Mammoths' eighth, Ames singled with one out. After the second out, Foust worked the count to 2-1 before launching a blast to left field that cleared the brand new fence at Memorial with room to spare and gave Amherst a 5-4 lead.Â
* In the WNE ninth, a single and an error put runners on first and second with one out. A walk loaded the bases, but
Matt Tabet induced a come backer to the mound and forced the runner out at home for the second out. Tabet then got a grounder to McCord to end the game.Â
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Tabet earned his first win of the season, allowing no runs over 1 1/3 frames. Â
* Amherst had 10 hits in the win. Foust was 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs and one run scored. McCord was 2 for 5.Â
