SPARKS, Md. – Bob Gross scored four goals, and the Amherst College men's lacrosse team had chances all afternoon, but the Mammoths ultimately fell 12-9 to Christopher Newport today at USA Lacrosse Headquarters.
Amherst stayed right with the Captains early, trading goals to a 3-3 tie after the opening quarter, and the Mammoths continued to generate quality looks throughout the game, finishing with a 51-38 advantage in shots and a 29-22 edge in shots on goal. The difference came in a pivotal second quarter, when Christopher Newport used a 4-1 period to take a 7-4 lead into halftime, and in goal, where Mason Bellinger turned away repeated Amherst opportunities with 20 saves.
Amherst made multiple pushes after the break behind Gross and Max Youssefnia (two goals), trimming the deficit late in the third and again early in the fourth. The Mammoths opened the final quarter with a goal 13 seconds in and later pulled within three on back-to-back finishes from Patrick Arnold and Youssefnia, but CNU answered quickly to steady itself and close out the win. Spencer Will made 10 saves for Amherst.
Along with Gross (4) and Youssefnia (2), Amherst got goals from Bennett Chow, Willie Doyle, and Arnold. Christopher Newport was led by Jamie Smith (four goals), and Kevin Miller scored twice in the fourth to help the Captains hold off Amherst's late charge.

Amherst matched CNU stride-for-stride in the first quarter. Gross opened the scoring for the Mammoths at 1:24 (assist Alex Vlacich), Chow finished at 5:19, and Doyle scored at 9:10 (assist Vlacich) as the teams ended the period tied 3-3.

The swing came in the second. Amherst's Gross scored at 12:44 to keep the Mammoths within reach, but Christopher Newport's late surge included goals by Levi Wentz at 9:18, Ryan Miller at 7:24 and 6:29 (the latter assisted by Wentz), and Smith at 4:17. Kevin Miller assisted in sending the Captains into halftime with a 7-4 lead.

Amherst pushed back in the third. Youssefnia scored at 2:24, and Gross added another at 14:01 (assist Willie Doyle), but CNU answered with goals from Smith at 10:19 and Jackson Shaw at 12:03 (assist Ryan Miller) to keep the margin intact heading into the fourth.

Amherst came out firing in the fourth, scoring 13 seconds in as Gross finished (assisted by Brendan Reilly) and continuing to pressure the cage. The Mammoths later got goals from Arnold at 8:17 and Youssefnia at 8:49 to keep the comeback within reach, but CNU responded with three early-quarter goals, Kevin Miller at 0:31 and 2:06, plus Smith at 2:18, to stop the rally and close out the win.
