Mammoths Suffer Setback at No. 2 Bowdoin, 12-9

BRUNSWICK, Me. – The Amherst College men's lacrosse team traded blows with unbeaten Bowdoin for most of the afternoon Saturday, even pulling even early in the third quarter, but the Polar Bears finished the job in a 12-9 NESCAC win at Whittier Field.

Amherst (3-4, 2-2 NESCAC) got a ton of production up front. Brendan Reilly, Alex Vlacich, Bennett Chow, and Patrick Arnold all scored two goals, and Max Youssefnia added a goal and two assists, and the Mammoths were right there after 30 minutes, down just 5-4 at the half.

The turning point came right after intermission. Amherst tied it 5-5 on Arnold's goal at 11:54 of the third (assist Vlacich), but Bowdoin answered with a three-goal surge, two of them on the man-up, to open up an 8-5 cushion. Amherst halted the run with Reilly's finish at 6:30 (assist Youssefnia), yet Bowdoin kept building the margin in the fourth before Amherst scored late to make it 12-9.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Bowdoin jumped ahead 4-2 late in the first, but Amherst steadied itself with goals from Patrick Arnold (9:07) and Alex Vlacich (4:45) and then a late strike from Bennett Chow at 1:38 (assist Willie Doyle) to keep it a one-goal game after one, 4-3.
  • Bowdoin's man-up goal at 8:21 of the second pushed the lead to 5-3, but Vlacich responded at 7:45 (assist Dylan Kelleher), and Amherst went to halftime down just 5-4.
  • Amherst drew level at 11:54 of the third on Arnold's second (assist Vlacich), but Bowdoin countered immediately and used a quick burst, highlighted by a man-up goal at 8:55, to stretch the margin to 8-5.
  • Amherst stayed alive in the fourth behind goals from Chow (10:11, assist Youssefnia) and Reilly (5:49, assist Vlacich), and Youssefnia added a late finish at 0:52 (assist Vlacich), but Bowdoin's answer goals at 9:18, 8:39, and 4:55 kept the Polar Bears in control.
