AMHERST, Mass. -- The Amherst College baseball team concluded its Spring Break Trip with five straight wins in which it outscored its opponents by an 87-18.
In Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Lawrence University, the Mammoths produced 36 hits in a 9-3, 24-0 demolition.
Amherst improved to 9-2 overall. The Mammoths will host Western New England University Wednesday at 4 p.m. in their first game on Memorial Field this season.
Game 1: Amherst 9, Lawrence 3:
* Sophomore
Nick Fassert dominated on the bump for Amherst, striking out 12 over six innings to earn the win. He did not walk a batter and gave up six hits and two runs. He held Lawrence off the scoreboard for 5 2/3 innings.
* In the meantime his teammates built him a 9-0 lead, scoring twice in the second and six in the fourth before adding one in the sixth.
* In the second, after a it batsman and two walks loaded the bases,
Leo Foust delivered a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
Tyler McCord followed with an RBI-single and a 2-0 lead.
* In the fourth, six straight Amherst hits opened the inning.
Ben Smith led off with a sinking line drive to center that could not be caught and went for a double.
Carson Ames singled and
Aiden Dubetsky followed with an RBI-single to right. Foust singled to load the bases before McCord ripped a drive into left field that found the fence and went for a two-run double.
Justin Orridge then ripped a single through the left side of the infield to score Foust.
Charlie LaFreniere had an run-scoring grounder before
Jackson Boyer lined an RBI-single to cap the uprising and make it 8-0 Amherst.
* The Mammoths had 13 hits in the victory. Orridge was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Boyers was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. McCord was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs.
Game 2: Amherst 24, Lawrence 0:
* First-year
Saahi Jetti set the tone, shutting out Lawrence for six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out eight while allowing four hits to earn the win.
* The game was over after a 10-run first inning by the Mammoths, but they also had a five-run third inning and an eight-run fifth inning en route to te win.
* In the first, three batters in it was 2-0. Dubetsky singled, Foust doubled and McCord lined a two-run double. Orridge and
Zander Carnahan had RBI-singles, as did Boyer,
J.J. Grimes got the start behind the plate and made it count with a two-run double. Foust's second hit of the inning, followed by a stolen base and wild pitch, led to the 10th and final run scoring on a McCord grounder.
* In the third the Mammoths scored five runs on five hits, the big blow an inside-the-park grand slam home run from first-year Carnahan.
* In the fifth,
Carson Ames cleared the bases by launching a three-run double into the left-center field gap. Classmate
Gabriel Ciechanover decimated a pitch to left for a two-run double as well.
* Amherst had 23 hits in the win. Foust went 4 for 5 with 4 runs scored and an RBI. McCord was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. First year Ames and Carnahan each ad 5 RBIs in te win, going 2 for 5 and 4 for 5, respectively.
