Mammoths roll to 20-5 win over Macalester

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- It was Madi Gras Thursday for the Amherst College baseball team as it banged out 19 hits in an 8-inning, 20-5 mercy-rule win over Macalester College at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

The win moved Amherst to 5-2 overall. The Mammoths are scheduled to play a doubleheader vs. Framingham State beginning at 11 a.m. The twinbill will be played at Lake Myrtle Field No. 5.

Senior Tyler McCord was the Grand Marshal of the Mammoths' hit parade, going 4 for 6 with 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Aiden Dubetsky was 3 for 5 with 5 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Carson Ames went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst scored three in the first, four in the second and three more in the top of the third to build a 10-0 lead.

* In the first, Dubetsky reached on an error and Leo Foust followed with a double. A McCord groundout scored a run and another error made it 2-0 before Jackson Boyer's single to right field with two outs made it 3-0.

* In the four-run second, Ames and Dubetsky led off with singles. Foust drew a walk to load the bases and just as quickly, McCord unloaded them, crushing a ball into the right-center field gap for a three-run double and 6-0 lead. Two batters later, Charlie LaFreniere's sacrifice fly scored McCord for a 7-0 lead.

* In the Mammoths' third, walks to Ben Smith and Ames brought up Dubetsky, who smoked a run-scoring double to right-center. A wild pitch scored Ames and a groundout scored the third for a 10-0 lead.

* In the top of the fifth, McCord launched an RBI-triple as his big day continued.

* The benefactor of all this hitting and running was Amherst senior Naaveen Narayanan, but makes no mistake, the big right-hander was on top of his game. He walked just one batter over five innings while fanning five and giving up four basehits to pick up his first win of the season. The only run charged to him was unearned.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* LaFreniere was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Boyer finished 2 for 6.
