INDIANAPOLIS – A 17th-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay highlighted the results for the Amherst College men's swimming and diving team as the NCAA Division III Championships kicked off with all five Mammoths who qualified for nationals in action on Wednesday at Indiana University Indianapolis.

First-year Owen Vale, junior Eric Albers, senior Fynlan Nadel and sophomore Jack Goepfrich posted a time of 3:17.66 in the 400 medley relay, which marked the NCAA Championship debut for Albers.

Vale made his nationals debut earlier in the session, swimming the 200-yard individual medley in 1:49.76 to place 24th in the nation, Amherst's best finish in that event since 2016.

First-year Benjamin Robins also qualified for nationals in his rookie season and finished 26th in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 4:32.66 in his first swim at the NCAA Championships.

The national championship meet continues through Saturday in Indianapolis with trials beginning at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. each day. Expected to compete on Thursday for Amherst are Goepfrich and Robins in the 200-yard freestyle, Nadel in the 100-yard butterfly, Vale in the 400-yard individual medley and the Mammoths' 200-yard freestyle relay squad.

Thursday's schedule includes both events in which the Mammoths won NESCAC championships this season. Goepfrich won the conference title in the 200 free and was an All-American in the event last season. Vale captured the NESCAC crown in the 400 IM and enters the NCAA Championships as the third seed. The Mammoths are ranked 13th in the nation in the latest CSCAA Division III poll.
