AMHERST, Mass. – Willie Doyle scored three goals and added an assist as the Amherst College men's lacrosse team opened its season with a 9-5 win over Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
Amherst used a strong second quarter to build separation, turning a 1-1 game after one into a 4-1 halftime lead. After Doyle tied the game late in the first, the Mammoths got second-quarter goals from Matthew Sheinberg (assist Brendan Reilly), Reilly (assist Doyle), and Bob Gross to take control heading into the break.
Hamilton responded with its best stretch coming out of halftime, scoring four times in the third quarter to erase the deficit. Carson Kraus and Frank Coyle each finished with two goals, and Hamilton drew even at 5-5 on Coyle's unassisted tally at 4:09 of the third.
But Amherst had the answer in the fourth, converting four straight goals in a span of just 3 minutes to put the game out of reach for the Continentals.
