Mammoths Come Up Short, 15-8, on the Road at Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. – First-year attack Patrick Arnold scored three goals, but the Amherst College men's lacrosse team fell in a 15-8 result at Tufts on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.

Amherst now (1-1, 1-1 NESCAC) briefly grabbed momentum late in the first quarter, getting goals from Bennett Chow and Brayden Stroh in a 15-second span to go in front, 3-2, but Tufts answered before the end of the period and carried a 10-3 lead into halftime behind a decisive second quarter.

Tufts (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) maintained control the rest of the way behind a balanced attack led by Garrett Kelly (3 goals, 1 assist), Will Emsing (2 goals, 3 assists), and Jack Regnery (1 goal, 3 assists).

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Amherst opened the scoring when Bob Gross finished unassisted at 12:50 of the first quarter. After Tufts scored twice to take a 2-1 lead, Amherst responded with Chow's goal at 3:59 (assist Willie Doyle) and Stroh's unassisted finish at 3:44 to move in front, 3-2. 

  • Tufts scored at 3:28 and 0:04 to take a 4-3 lead after one. 

  • The Jumbos created separation in the second quarter and took a 10-3 advantage into halftime.

  • Amherst got goals from Stroh (8:13) and Arnold (6:14) in the third, but Tufts answered twice, including a goal at 0:49, to carry a 12-5 lead into the fourth.

  • Arnold netted two more in the fourth (at 10:03 and 2:25), and Gross added a goal at 10:41 (assist Thompson Lau), but Tufts' man-up goal at 12:43 helped the hosts keep distance down the stretch.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Amherst won the faceoff battle 14-13. 

  • Amherst was more efficient on clears, going 23-for-26 compared to Tufts' 26-for-28.

  • Amherst earned more extra-man opportunities than Tufts (2 to 1).
