Dann Delivers in Overtime as Amherst Slips Past Hamilton, 1-0

CLINTON, N.Y. -- Amherst College senior Gretchen Dann scored one minute into overtime Saturday night, lifting the 6th-ranked Mammoths to a key 1-0 win at Hamilton.

With the overtime win, Amherst improved to 15-2-6 overall, 8-1-6 in conference play. Hamilton slipped to 11-7-5 overall, 7-5-3 in the NESCAC. The two teams conclude the regular season Sunday afternoon back in Clinton. Puck drop is 3 p.m.

Saturday night, for 60 minutes, the teams traded chances in a tightly contested battle. Amherst tested Hamilton goaltender Teagan Brown early and often, with Sami Lester and Gretchen Dann generating opportunities in the opening minutes. Brown stood firm, turning aside shot after shot to keep the Mammoths off the board.

At the other end, Natalie Stott matched her save for save. Hamilton found stretches of sustained pressure midway through the first period, including a pipe-rattling chance from Sarah Myziuk, but Stott's steady presence in net preserved the deadlock. By the end of the first period, both teams had piled up attempts, yet neither could solve the opposing goalie.

The second period followed a similar script. Amherst pushed the pace during multiple power plays, moving the puck crisply and creating clean looks from the slot and the point. Hamilton's penalty kill, however, held strong. Brown continued to absorb pressure, while Stott turned away a flurry of Hamilton shots during a mid-period surge.

The third period brought heightened urgency. Amherst generated sustained offensive-zone time, firing a barrage of shots in the middle frame of the period. Cara Mancini, Bea Flynn, and Ayla Abban each forced Brown into key saves, while Hamilton defenders sacrificed their bodies to block attempts in traffic. With under four minutes remaining, Amherst briefly pulled Stott for an extra attacker to tilt the ice, then returned her to the crease as play shifted back the other way.

With just over tree minutes left, the Mammoths went on a power-play after a tripping penalty and generated multiple dangerous chances, but Brown was able to keep the puck out of the goal.

Overtime required just one decisive moment.

Reynolds won a face-off in her own zone and drew the puck back to Dann, who headed behind er own goal, stopped on a dime and raced up the left side, beating a Continental defender in the process. Shen delivered a cross-ice pass that found Marie-Eve Marleu streaking across the red zone. Marleau skated into the Hamilton zone and as she hit the right face-off circle, cut in on the goal and took a sharp-angle shot. Brown got her stick on it, deflecting up into the air. The puck landed near Dann, now in the slot right in front of the goal. Dann batted the puck to her right toward some open space in the goal on the side. Te puck quickly deflected off a Continental defender's skate and trickled into the goal for the game-winner. It was Dann's team-leading 14th goal of the season.

It was a fitting finish to a night dominated by discipline, defensive commitment, and standout goaltending. Stott's composure throughout regulation laid the foundation, and when the opening finally appeared in overtime, Amherst seized it.'

Stott made 29 saves while getting credit for the 41st shutout of her illustrious career and 8th on the season.
