Vale, Goepfrich claim individual NESCAC titles

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Amherst College men's swimming and diving team recorded several scoring performances during Saturday finals at the NESCAC Championships, highlighted by an individual conference title and multiple point-scoring swims.

First-year Owen Vale led the Mammoths with a win in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing first in 3:50.78, a time listed as a NESCAC, meet, and pool record.  

Sophomore Jack Goepfrich was crowned a NESCAC champion as well, he took home the top spot in the 200 free wit an NCAA B cut time of 1:37.30. First-year J.P. Giglio was sixth in the event, racing to a time of 1:39.53. Amherst added points in the 200-yard freestyle as Ethan Van De Water placed 16th overall in 1:41.73.  

Amherst remain 3rd in the team standings after day 3 wit 894 points. Tufts (1,198) and Williams (1,168) are vying for the team title.

In an incredible display of depth, Amherst took home the 4-6 spots in the championship of the 100-yard breaststroke. Junior Eric Albers was 4th in 54.06,; senior Nadel was 5th in 54.33 and junior Henry Liu was 6th in 54.90

In the 100-yard breaststroke championship final, Fyn Nadel placed fourth in 54.80 and Henry Liu finished fifth in 54.80.

In the 100 yard- backstroke, two swimmers tallied points for the Mammoths. Jonah Luetke finished in 10th place, with a time of 50:50, while Emmanuel Odim finished in 11th overall in 50.80. All three Mammoths swam to B cut standards.  

In the 200-medley relay, the Amherst quartet of Emmanuel Odim, Fynn Nadel, Cameron Aryanpour, and Van De Water placed 4th with an NCAA B provisional time of 1:29.02. 

First-year Benjamin Robins swam 25 seconds faster than his prelim time and finished in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:13.05. Sophomore Charlir McMillon was 14th with a time of 9:42.60, 24 seconds better than his seed time.

Aryanpour won the consolation final of the 100 fly, placing 9th overall in 48.90 seconds.
