#2 Mammoths ice Golden Bears, 4-0, behind Stott's 37th career shutout

AMHERST, Mass. -- Natalie Stott stopped 23 shots Thursday night for her 37th career shutout and four different teammates scored as the #2-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team posted a 4-0 win over Western New England University at Orr Rino to remain unbeaten.

The Mammoths improved to 8-0-2 on the season and will play at home Sunday vs. Oswego State at 1 p.m. The Golden Bears fell to 7-5-0 on the season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst came out aggressively from the opening faceoff, immediately establishing offensive-zone pressure and forcing Western goalie Rachael Irving to make several early saves. The Mammoths generated chance after chance in the first ten minutes, with shots from Bea Flynn, Clara Cumming, Emily Hohmann, and Gretchen Dann testing the WNE defense. On the other end, Amherst's blue line remained disciplined, blocking multiple attempts and limiting the Golden Bear's looks at the net. When WNE did break through, Stott was sharp, calmly handling shots and freezing the puck to slow momentum.

* The breakthrough came at 15:54 of the first period. Calleigh Brown opened the scoring with a clean finish after receiving a pass from Ayla Abban, with Clare O'Connor also earning an assist. The goal, Brown's fifth of the season, capped off a sustained stretch of pressure and gave Amherst a deserved 1–0 lead.

* Momentum continued to swing in Amherst's favor late in the period when a Golden Bear player was called for interference at 17:13. The Mammoths' power play went to work immediately, firing seven shots in just over a minute. At 18:35, Natalie Fu capitalized, burying a power-play goal off a setup from Annabel Raffin to double Amherst's advantage. The goal sent the Mammoths into the first intermission with a 2–0 lead and firmly in control of the game.

* WNE attempted to respond early in the second period, generating a handful of chances, but Amherst's defensive structure and Stott's poise in net held strong. The Mammoths weathered multiple penalties during the middle frame, including a stretch where Western enjoyed extended power-play time. Amherst's penalty kill was disciplined and aggressive, blocking shots and clearing rebounds, while Stott turned aside every attempt to keep the shutout intact.

* At 15:06 of the second period, Amherst extended the lead to 3–0. Emily Hohmann scored her first goal of the season after a well-executed offensive sequence, finishing a pass from Clara Cumming, with Sami Lester also earning an assist. The goal rewarded Amherst's persistence and capped off a period in which the Mammoths controlled possession despite spending time shorthanded.

* Leading 3–0 entering the third, Amherst showed no signs of letting up. The Mammoths continued to push the pace, rolling all four lines and keeping Western pinned in its own zone for long stretches. Just over six minutes into the period, Bea Flynn added the final goal of the night, finishing a setup from Maeve Reynolds and Gretchen Dann at 6:07. The goal, Flynn's third of the season, put the game firmly out of reach at 4–0.

Amherst continued to generate quality looks for the remainder of the contest, hitting posts and forcing Irving into several more saves, while the defense remained airtight. Western had a few late chances, but Stott was flawless, tracking the puck well through traffic and denying any rebound opportunities.

* Stott finished the night with 23 saves to earn the shutout, her second consecutive clean sheet, anchoring a defensive effort that limited Western to few high-danger chances. Amherst also dominated in the face-off circle, led by Maeve Reynolds (11–6), Annabel Raffin (9–4), Carlisle Brush (7–2), and Brown (4–1), allowing the Mammoths to control tempo throughout the game.
