Amherst, MASS – The Amherst College Volleyball team defeated cross-town foe Mount Holyoke 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-13, 25-22) in the first game of the Fall Smash Tournament Friday night. The Mammoths advance to 1-1 on the season.
The Mammoths will return to the court tomorrow for a double-header as they face Oswego State at 12:30 pm and Western New England University at 5:30 pm. Both matches will be played in LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths dominated the start of the first set with four kills from Addison Lau, lifting Amherst to a 10-3 lead. The Mammoths continued to lead the Lyons with Chideraa Ngwadom and Abby Nichols each recording two kills in the set. Ngwadom and Naima Cho-Khaliq combined for a critical block to make the score 21-15. The Mammoths held off a late surge from the Lyons to win the set 25-20.

The second set was more evenly matched, with the two teams tied at 7-7. The Lyons won the next 4 of 5 points to pull ahead, but kills from Nichols and Charlotte Rasmussen, as well as a service ace from Judith Subirats-Bosch brought the Mammoths ahead, 14-13. Sofia Camilo and Nichols combined for two blocks in the set, helping the Mammoths maintain their momentum, but the Lyons did not let up. The teams continued to trade points, but the Lyons went on a 6-point run late in the set to take the lead and eventually pulled away, winning 25-22.

The Mammoths took control of the third set right away and never trailed Mt Holyoke. Five different players tallied kills for the Mammoths in the third set with Allie McLaughlin and Camilo notching three each. Zosia Teraszkiewicz recorded the only service ace in the set and the Mammoths came away with the set off of a kill from Chloe Casillas-Burns, 25-13.

The Mammoths fought hard in the fourth set to come away with a victory. Amherst started the set strong as Brielle Renwick notched three kills. Camilo, Rasmussen, and Reina Hassell all notched crucial kills to bring the Mammoths ahead, 16-6. The Lyons did not give up, though, scoring the next 8 of 9 points to narrow the gap. Mt. Holyoke continued to rally, bringing the score to 24-22, but a service error ended the set and the Mammoths came away on top.
