Mammoths take down Oswego State in straight sets, defeat Western New England in four sets

Amherst, Mass – The Amherst College Volleyball Team improves to 3-1 on the season after winning all three of their games in the Fall Smash Tournament this weekend. 

The Mammoths swept Oswego State 25-23, 25-21, 25-17. Later on Saturday, the Mammoths battled with Western New England University but came out on top after four hard sets, 21-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-24. 

The Mammoths will look to continue their winning streak in New York City on Saturday, September 12th, as they face NYU in the first game of the Violet Volleyball Weekend tournament.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS vs OSWEGO STATE

* The first set of the match was a hard-fought victory for the Mammoths, with the two teams trading off points throughout the set. Abby Nichols and Sofia Camilo started the scoring for Amherst, combining for a block. Audrey Krichev and Judith Subirats-Bosch each registered a service ace for the Mammoths. The Lakers and Mammoths battled the whole set, but kills from Camilo and Addison Lau lifted the Mammoths to victory, 25-23. 

* The Mammoths had a strong offensive start to the second set, scoring 9 of the first 10 points. The Lakers held strong, going on a 5-point run to close the gap. Kills from Lau, Camilo, and Nichols, and a solo block from Chideraa Ngwadom, kept the Mammoths ahead, and a kill by senior Charlotte Rasmussen helped the Mammoths close the set, 25-21.

* The Mammoths did not let up in the third set. Allie McLaughlin had a kill and two service aces to help bring the Mammoths ahead, 10-2. First-year Gabrielle Hines had two big kills to maintain the Mammoth lead. The Lakers attempted to stay in the match, but the offensive prowess from the Mammoths was overwhelming as Amherst won the match, 25-17.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS vs WESTERN NEW ENGLAND

* The Golden Bears of WNE came out strong in the first set, taking the lead right away. The Mammoths fought back with Hines, Camilo, and Tiana Richardson all registering kills. Zosia Teraszkiewicz earned four straight kills to keep the Mammoths in it, but it wasn't enough, and WNE came out on top, 25-21.

* The Mammoths came out strong in the second set with kills from Ellie Meyers, Lau, and Nichols putting Amherst ahead, 8-5. Teraszkiewicz and Nichols each had a service ace to jump-start a 9-point run for the Mammoths. A kill from Lau and a service ace from Krichev gave the Mammoths the second set, 25-13. 

* The third set was an even battle with both teams trading points through the set. Lau tallied four kills and a service ace to give the Mammoths some momentum. Nichols had a crucial kill to give the Mammoths the lead at 19-17. Amherst took the set off two consecutive kills from Camilo, winning 25-20.

* In the fourth set, both teams had offensive surges. With the score tied at 8-8, Lau and Brielle Renwick scored four straight kills. The Golden Bears consistently battled back and scored 6 straight points to take the lead 22-18. A kill from Meyers and an ace from Krichev narrowed the gap, and the Mammoths closed the set with a 5-point run to win the match, 26-24. 

BY THE NUMBERS

* Addison Lau led the Mammoths with 28 kills on the day. Camilo had 16, and Meyers tallied 11.

* Camilo registered 4 blocks against Oswego State. Ngwadom earned 3 in the first match.

* Judith Subirats-Bosch had 46 assists on the day.
