Donegan's double propels #16 Mammoths past Pride in season opener, 2-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Two goals from senior Molly Donegan propelled the Mammoths to blank Springfield College 2-0 in their season opener on Wednesday night at Stagg Field.
Amherst rose to 1-0 on the season while Springfield fell to 1-1 overall. The Mammoths will stay on the road and head to New London next, where they'll face off against Connecticut College at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

*Donegan scored Amherst's first goal of the season in the 8th minute as the forward collected a rebound from senior Isa Lattuada and fired into the lower left corner.

*In the second minute of the second quarter, first-year Emma Zhang fought her way to an opening inside the arch, finding sophomore Caroline Busler alone at the right post, but the shot glanced off the iron.

*Eleven minutes later, sophomore Emily Huehn ended a Springfield breakaway with a steal and passed back up the field to safety.

*With an outstretched leg, junior Grace Puchalski kept the Mammoths in the lead at the start of the third quarter as the goaltender deflected a one-on-one shot from sophomore Hailey Gaydos.

*Junior Katie Kantrovitz set up Amherst's second goal eight minutes later with an overhead pass that found Donegan open in front of the frame. Donegan took a few touches, then fired into the lower left corner to extend Amherst's lead to 2-0.

*The Mammoths continued to put pressure on the Pride in the fourth quarter as Huehn fired a powerful slapshot that forced a save from first-year goaltender Sam Orcutt.
