Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#13 Mammoths fall to Bates, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- After a hard-fought 2-1 road win earlier this week against Babson, the Amherst College men's soccer team hosted Bates on Saturday afternoon for their annual Pride Game on Hitchcock Field.

Despite Amherst's efforts to control the game, Bates struck first in the opening half and added two more goals in the second half, handing the Mammoths their first loss of the 2025 season and their first defeat against Bates since 2004. It was the Bobcats first win at Amherst since 1992.

"All the credit goes to Bates," said Amherst head coach Justin Serpone. "They beat us in the first minute, all the way until the final whistle. They are a good team and absolutely earned the three points. There was not one moment they didn't have the game fully in hand.

"Losing 3-0 at home isn't something we've had happen in the time I've been the coach," he added. "It's both humbling and a reminder of how difficult our league is."

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Amherst generated chances early, including earning a dangerous free kick just outside the 18-yard box late in the first half. An Amherst player was able to get a head on it, but did not find the back of the net.
  • Bates broke through in the 37th minute when a cross from the right side deflected off an Amherst defender in the box and fell to an unmarked Bobcat attacker, who slotted the ball home from close range.
  • Midfielder Michael Cherico played a key role in the opening 45 minutes, winning aerial battles in midfield and clearing several Bobcat crosses in the Mammoths' defensive third.
  • Bates doubled their lead in the 55th minute off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. The service found a Bates front-post runner who redirected the ball into the back of the net.
  • The Bobcats sealed the result in the 62nd minute after a diagonal run in behind from a Bates forward created a breakaway. Although goalkeeper Trey Sheppard made the initial save, the rebound fell directly to another Bates forward, who converted to make it 3-0.
  • Amherst kept pushing and showed their persistence throughout the match, culminating in a late chance in the 87th minute when Ioannis Hadjiyiannis won a free kick just outside the box. Despite his efforts, the attempt sailed just over the crossbar.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Bates slightly edged Amherst in shots (13–12), with most of their looks coming after halftime.
  • The Mammoths generated many of their chances through set pieces, finishing with a 5–4 advantage in corners.
  • Luka Ohadike, Mohammed Nuhu, and Obed Opoku led the Amherst attack with two shots each.
UP NEXT:
  • With this loss, Amherst now moves to a 4-1-3 overall record (1-1-2 against NESCAC opposition).
  • The Mammoths will look to bounce back quickly as they host Colby College tomorrow, Sunday, September 28, at 2:30 p.m. on Hitchcock Field.
