Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#13 Mammoths Clip Colby on Nuhu's Strike, 1-0

AMHERST, MA — On Sunday afternoon, the #13 Amherst College men's soccer team played its second home game this weekend. After Amherst's first loss of the season yesterday against Bates, the Mammoths were able to bounce back to win against Colby, another NESCAC rival from Maine. Junior Mohammed Nuhu scored the game's only goal in the first half for a 1-0 win for Amherst, improving their record to 5-1-3.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Mammoths started out strong, scoring early in the first half with a well-structured goal. Amherst got a throw-in on the right, 25 yards from the goal, which was thrown to Timothy Chow, who crossed the ball on top of the center box, finding Vincent Akanbo, who turned and chipped the ball to Mohammed Nuhu, who skillfully finished from the right box to the left side of the goal, putting Amherst in the lead early. The goal was his 4th for the season.
  • Mohammed Nuhu was looking to score his second goal of the day, only 6 minutes later, with a great chance inside the box. Once again starting from a throw-in, the ball was launched to the box, finding Riley Priddy who headed it to Mohammed Nuhu who was 10 yards away from the goal and took a shot with his right foot, just high of the goal.
  • Going into the second half, the Mammoths were up 1-0, and they were hungry to extend the lead. In the 47th minute, Michael Cherico and Mohammed Nuhu created an opportunity right outside the box. Nuhu found Cherico in a good position with space for a goal, but Cherico missed just wide with a slightly mistimed shot.
  • In the 55th minute, Jacob Dinzeo made a run for it from the midfield all the way to the box, dribbling past three defenders in an incredible effort, finally finding  Mohammed Nuhu, who passed it to Vincent Akanbo for a shot that missed just high of the goal. Amherst's goalie, Spencer Kreitzer, made a crucial save in the 88th minute from Chase Delinko's shot near the goal. Amherst was able to keep up strong defense for the rest of the game, keeping a clean sheet and coming out with a victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst had 12 shots (3 on goal); Colby had 13 (5 on goal).
  • Amherst had 3 corner kicks; Colby had 5.
