Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#1 Mammoths ground Falcons 3-1 in home opener

AMHERST, Mass. -- A strong performance by the Mammoths on Wednesday night improves their record to 2-0-1.

The No. 1 ranked Amherst College men's soccer team and defending national champions, took on Albertus Magnus College on their home field and prevailed with a 3-1 victory.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

-   Amherst had possession most of the time and had many chances throughout the   game. A notable chance came on the 23rd minute when freshman Roey Kenig dribbled through three defenders, and followed up with a shot at the crossbar.

-  Amherst opened score with a strong team effort on the 28th minute. Kenig passed to Opoku on the right who crossed the ball to Wilensky in the box. Wilensky attempted a header on goal which was blocked by Albertus Magnus's Lucero. Wilensky was able to get his own rebound, which led to a tap-in goal for the Mammoths, and Wilensky's second collegiate goal.

-   The Mammoths extended their lead with a beautiful goal by Opoku on the 73rd minute. He brought the ball from left midfield to the box, dribbling through a defender, setting up a shot on his right foot, and firing a shot to the right corner of the goal

-   Less than a minute later, Opoku sent a long pass to Krishnan on the right who crossed to the ball, finding Wilensky. Wilensky scored his second for the night and the third for the season, extending Amherst's lead to 3-0.

- Albert Magnus opened its score the following minute with a goal by Lauria, assisted by Coelho. After these three goals in three minutes, neither team was able to score again.

-   Amherst's Juan Perez had an impressive on the 87th minute to keep the two-goal lead

 BY THE NUMBERS:

- The Mammoths had a strong statistical game, as they had 28 shots, while Albertus Magnus had 3 shots. Amherst also led in corner kicks, having 5 in each half, compared to Albertus Magnus's 3 corner kicks total.
