CLAREMONT, CA -- Amherst College sophomore
Andreas Sillaste advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Div. III Singles Tournament Friday with two hard-fought victories.
Sillaste will take on Advik Mareedu of Claremont Mudd Scripps Saturday afternoon (Est) in the quarterfinal match.
The Oulu, Finland native began the individuals tournament wth a second round win over No. 7 Alex Feies of Carnegie Mellon University, taking the first set 6-4 before closing out the straight-set win with a 7-5 decision in the second set.
In the third round, Sillaste met up with NESCAC rival Nicholas Chen of Williams College. The pair had met up back on March 8 in a dual match, with Sillaste preveiling there, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
On Friday, the two rivals went to a first-set tiebreak where Sillaste dominated from the start 7-2, taking the open set 7-6. He closed out his conference foe 7-5 in the second set to move onto the quarterfinals.
Sillaste also advanced to the NCAA singles tournament quarterfinals last season, his first.
