Amherst win eight titles as Mammoths earn runner-up finish at NESCAC Championships; Schmidt breaks 85-year-old program record

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- First-years Austin Brown, Gavin Schmidt, sophomores Parker Boyle, Stan CraigMichael Abbey Jr., Kaleb Barrett, and the Mammoth 4x100m relay team won NESCAC titles as the Amherst College men's track and field team finished second at the NESCAC Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Wesleyan University. 

The Mammoths tallied 164 points to finish as the runner up. Middlebury won their third NESCAC title with 169 points. 

Amherst recorded 14 All-NESCAC performances, awarded to the top three finishers in each event while Schmidt broke an 85-year-old program record in the shot put and the 4x400m relay team set a championship meet record. 

The Mammoths resume competition next weekend for the New England Division III Outdoor Championships, which will be contested on Friday and Saturday (May 2-3) at Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Schmidt won NESCAC titles in the shot put and discus. The rookie established a new school record in the shot put with a mark of 15.91m, beating the 85-year-old record of 15.05m set in 1940 by Prescott Coan '40. In the discus, Schmidt recorded a winning throw of 44.57m.  

* The Amherst 4x400m relay team of first-year Will Diana, senior Jai Dreher, first-year Kean Tanyi-Tang, and junior Cody Pierce won the event as the Mammoths clocked in a time of 3:15.84. This surpasses the meet record of 3:16.15 set by Williams in 2024. 

* Brown won a title in the 1500m, registering a personal best of 3:52.79.

* Boyle won the 800m delivering a season best of 1:50.43 while finishing as the runner up in the 1500m with a personal record of 3:54.32. 

* Craig produced a winning time of 14:33.88 in the 5000m, earning a NESCAC individual title. 

* Barrett won the NESCAC title in the long jump, producing a mark of 7.06m. 

* Abbey Jr. won his second straight NESCAC title in the triple jump, registering a mark of 14.22m. 

* The 4x100m relay team of Tanyi-Tang, Pierce, junior Alexander Nichols, and senior Jordan Harrison recorded a runner-up finish of 41.92. 

* Pierce placed second overall in the 400m, crossing the line with a personal best of 48.21 before placing third in the 200m with a time of 21.71. 

* In the field, junior Charlie Spurrell threw a mark of 54.10m to place as the runner up. 

* Senior David Brown placed second overall in the discus, posting a distance of 44.20m.
