Giaccobe's Goal in Final Minutes Rallies #7/8 Mammoths to 8-7 Win At Bates

LEWISTON, Maine. – Junior Alex Giacobbe recorded a hat trick, including the game-winning goal with just over a minute remaining, to lift the Amherst College men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 8-7 victory over Bates College on Saturday afternoon at Garcelon Field.

The Mammoths rallied late to earn the win in a tightly contested NESCAC matchup that featured five lead changes.

Amherst and Bates traded goals throughout the first half, with neither team leading by more than two. After entering halftime tied at 4-4, the Mammoths outscored the Bobcats 3-1 in the third quarter to seize momentum. Bates mounted a comeback in the final period, knotting the game with under seven minutes to play. But Giacobbe's third goal, assisted by Dylan Hsu at the 1:12 mark, proved to be the difference.

With the win, Amherst improves to 9-2 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday (April 16) when they travel to RPI for a 5 pm game.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Bates opened the scoring just 2:32 into the first quarter, as Connor Hartman tallied a man-up goal off a feed from Xander Frey. Amherst responded quickly when Giacobbe netted his first of the day off an assist from Bennett Chow, evening the score at 1-1.
     
  • The teams continued to trade punches in the second quarter. Riley McClure scored twice for Bates, while Hartman added his second of the game to give the Bobcats a 4-2 edge. Amherst answered with three quick goals in the final two minutes of the half—Thompson Lau (from Dylan Hsu), Nico Berger (unassisted), and Willie Doyle (man-up from Alex Vlacich)—tying the game at 4-4 heading into the break.
     
  • Giacobbe's unassisted goal at 7:39 of the third quarter gave the Mammoths their first lead of the game. After a quick Bates equalizer, Amherst surged ahead with goals from Hsu (assisted by Brayden Stroh) and Brendan Reilly (assisted by Vlacich), ending the third with a 7-5 advantage.
     
  • Bates battled back in the fourth, as McClure completed his hat trick at 8:11, and Frey followed with an unassisted goal to make it 7-7. With time winding down, Amherst executed under pressure—Hsu found Giacobbe cutting to the cage, and the junior buried the decisive goal with 1:12 on the clock.
