RPI Engineers 15-5 Win Over #7/8 Mammoths

TROY, NY. –  Despite a late run during the second half, a high-scoring game for RPI led to a 15-5 defeat for the Amherst College men's lacrosse team Wednesday night.
 
Senior Dylan Hsu recorded two goals to lead the Amherst, which fell to 9-3 on the season.
 
Amherst was down two goals at the end of quarter one with a score of 2-0. RPI put four points on the board in quarter two, sending the Mammoths into halftime trailing 6-0.  The Mammoths put three points on the board in quarter three while conceding three points to RPI.
 
The Mammoths will return to action against Tufts University for Senior Day on Saturday (April 19) at 1 p.m. on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
 
* Bob Gross nearly put the Mammoths on the board early, firing the first shot of the game and hitting the post. The Mammoths ceded a goal to RPI with 12 minutes and 57 seconds on the clock. With a little over eight minutes remaining in the quarter, Matthew Sheinberg and Nico Berger fired promising shots that were near goals. RPI put another goal on the board before the end of the quarter.
 
* RPI increased their lead to 5-0, and after a brief timeout initiated by the Mammoths at the nine-minute mark, Nicholas Kopp won a face-off and picked up a ground ball. Three minutes later, Lawson Laverty followed suit, picking up a ground ball and achieving a successful clear attempt to set up Bennett Chow to fire a promising shot that was saved by RPI's goalie. In the final five minutes of the half, Amherst fired seven shots, but unfortunately, none resulted in a goal.
 
* Amherst scored its first goal of the game three minutes into the third quarter. This goal gave the Mammoths some momentum, resulting in Brendan Reilly picking up a ground ball at the ten-and-a-half-minute mark that he turned into a goal. RPI strung together three goals in the remainder of the quarter, but Amherst continued to battle, with Matthew Sheinberg scoring a goal with only 9 seconds remaining on the clock.
 
* Dylan Hsu assisted Willie Doyle to a man-up goal in the first forty seconds of the final quarter. Despite the Mammoths' efforts, a high-scoring final quarter for RPI led to the defeat of the Mammoths, 15-5.
 
BY THE NUMBERS:
 
* Amherst won 12 of 24 faceoffs.
 
* The Mammoths racked up 10 saves and fired 36 shots.
