Finley's Six-Goal Outing Leads Mammoths Over Ducks 16-12

3/29/2025 9:36:00 PM

Box Score HOBOKEN, NJ. -- A six-goal game from junior Bridget Finely led No. 13-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team to a win in a top-20 non-conference matchup on Saturday, March 29. With no NESCAC games on the docket this weekend, the Mammoths traveled to New Jersey to take on #20 Stevens Institute of Technology. Amherst put on a clinic, making a statement by downing the Ducks 16-12.

With the victory, the Mammoths win their fourth straight and improve to 6-2 this season, while Stevens falls to 5-4. Amherst will play the final game of their road trip on Wednesday, April 2 at Little Three Rival #7 Wesleyan. The game against the Cardinals will begin at 6 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Clara Sosa got the Mammoths on the board first, with the junior netting a free-position shot low stick-side just 35 seconds into the contest to make it 1-0. They doubled their lead just under four minutes later, when Kate Becker got the ball at X and found Ella Shay cutting to the cage for the close-range finish. Stevens got on the board next to narrow the advantage to 2-1, but that wouldn't last long as Amherst responded by way of Finley, who scored twice in the final two minutes of the frame to give the team a 4-1 lead after one quarter.

* The away side had multiple opportunities early in the second quarter to extend their lead, but Sydney Kang's behind-the-back attempt went just wide. That offensive aggression resulted in a stretch of three-goal stretch in 90 seconds of game time. Emily Petersen scored first, taking it to the cage with a full head of steam after a beautiful dump-off pass from Sosa. Sosa continued the barrage with her second of the afternoon before Finley completed her first-half hattrick with a slick catch-and-shoot move to make it 7-1 Amherst.

* That margin quickly became 8-1 with Shay converting a free-position before Stevens was able to score for the first time in almost 20 minutes of gametime to shrink the advantage to six. Sofia Guttmann had something to say about that, netting a rocket from the 8-meter off a free-position opportunity to give her team a 9-2 lead at the half.

* The second half was a back-and-forth affair: the Ducks got the second half going with a goal, but a big save by goalie Lily Samoska on a free-position opportunity prevented Stevens from gaining momentum, and a goal from Kang restored the team's seven-goal lead shortly thereafter. Stevens scored once more, with Finley netting two in response. The Ducks would not go quietly, though, putting one past Samoska while playing a woman up to go into the fourth quarter with the score at 12-7.

*  Petersen scored three more times and Sosa netted once more in the fourth, while Stevens potted six of their own to account for the 16-11 final scoreline.

BY THE NUMBERS:
* Finley's 6 goals is the highest individual goal-scoring output of the season for the Mammoths, and the highest individual game total of her career.

* The Mammoths' nine first-half goals marks their highest output in the first half so far this season, with their next closest being the eight first-half goals they put past MIT just over two weeks ago.

* Samoska made six saves versus the Ducks.
