SMITHTOWN, R.I. -- First-year Gavin Schmidt placed third in the discus as the throwers from the Amherst College men's track and field team opened the first day of the Black and Gold Invitational on Friday evening. 

Amherst will resume competition tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by Bryant University.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Schmidt recorded a personal best in the discus, throwing a distance of 48.02m to place third overall in a field of 36 competitors.

* Junior Charlie Spurrell placed ninth out of 41 athletes in the hammer, delivering a mark of 52.53m. 

* Senior David Brown posted a New England Division III qualifying mark of 49.34m in the hammer, posting a seven-meter season best.
