Stag Hen Day One: #13 Amherst Pushes #4 Denison to the Wire, Rolls Past #24 NCWU

CLAREMONT, CA – The #13 Amherst College men's tennis team opened play at the prestigious Stag Hen Invitational with a doubleheader on Friday. Up first, the Mammoths faced the on-form #4 Denison University Big Red, falling in a nail-bitingly close 4-3 loss. A couple of hours later, Amherst played their second match of the day, this time versus the #24 North Carolina Wesleyan Bishops, during which they bounced back with a dominant 6-1 win. 
Up Next: With a win and a loss, Amherst moves to 7-3 on the season (2-1 versus NESCAC teams). Tomorrow, they will close out their spring break trip with one final match at the Stag Hen Invitational, taking on the #29 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Saturday at 10 AM PDT at the Pauley Tennis Complex in Claremont, CA. 

HIGHLIGHTS vs. #4 Denison:
  • The Mammoths got the doubles point over their opponent from Ohio with wins at the #2 and #3 spots with scores of 6-4 and 6-3, respectively.
  • Each of the singles was hard-fought, with the Mammoths prevailing sophomore Rex Harrison and junior George Chaidemenos prevailing at the #4 and #6 spots, respectively, in three-set battles. 
  • Denison clinched the match at the #1 spot with a third set tiebreak win in a match lasting 140 minutes.

  • Amherst won the doubles point with convincing wins at the #1 and #3 spots.
  • The Mammoths then continued their momentum in the singles matches, winning five out of six matches, four of which were in straight sets.
  • Senior Edred Opie battled past Deigo Segovia at the #2 spot in a second set tiebreak.
