DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Strong starts from
Nick Fassert and
E.J. Nevills were not enough Saturday as the Amherst College baseball team concluded its spring break trip with a pair of heartbreaking 1-0 losses to Coe College at Northeast Regional Park.
Amherst heads home with a 6-6 record. The Mammoths will take on Western New England University in West Springfield Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The Kohawks improved to 10-3 with the sweep.Â
Both games Saturday were 7-inning affairs. It was the first time Amherst had been shutout in back-to-back games, and both ends of a doubleheader, since April 25, 2015.
* Both of Coe's runs on the day came in its final at-bat of each game.Â
Coe 1, Amherst 0, Game 1
* As he has been apt to do early in his Amherst career, Fassert had above average control while spreading out the hits to Coe in the opener. He ran into some trouble in the third as Coe loaded the bases with one out, but induced an inning-ending double play grounder to second baseman
Tyler McCord, who flipped to SS
Ryan McIntyre covering second and the relay throw to first was in time.Â
* In the Coe fourth, Fassert opened by issuing his only walk, but Mammoth catcher
J.J. Grimes gunned down the runner trying to steal second with a perfect peg.
* In the Amherst fifth,
Charlie LaFreniere and
Justin Orridge opened the frame with back-to-back singles, but Coe reliever Tyler Johnson fanned the next two Mammoths before getting a groundout to second to end the threat.
* Fassert had retired eight straight batters heading into the bottom of the seventh when Austin Gomez lined an opposite-field home run to lead off the inning and end the game.Â
* Fassert took the complete game loss, going six frames, giving up only four hits and one walk while fanning two. Orridge went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Coe 1, Amherst 0, Game 2
* In his first start of the season Nevills, the reigning NESCAC Pitcher of the Week, was advertised, allowing only a single hit through six full frames while walking only one and striking out seven over 98 pitches. He left the scoreless game after the sixth.Â
* The Mammoths had several chances to score, starting in the bottom of the first when
Jack Boyle led off with a triple down the right-field line. However, Boyle was tagged out when McCord ripped a hard grounder right at the Kohawks' third sacker, catching the Amherst runner off the bag.Â
* In the Mammoths second, LaFreniere led off with a double and Orridge walked, but LaFreniere was picked off second by the Kohawks' catcher, unfortunate as A.J. Zaccaero followed with a single through the right side. On that play, Orridge was thrown out at third on a strong throw by the Kohawks' right fielder.Â
* In the Amherst third, two walks and a hits batsman loaded the bases with one out for the Mammoths, but a 5-2-3 double play grounder off the bat of
Ryan McIntyre ended the threat.
* In the top of the seventh, Sampedro relieved Nevills and gave up a single, a groundout that moved the runner to second, a balk and walk before hitting two batters in a row to force home a run.Â
* The Mammoths had a final chance in the bottom of the frame, as Orridge led off the inning with a long double to left-center field. Zaccaero laid down a nice sacrifice bunt to get him to third with one out.
Ben Smith then ripped a liner back up the middle that was snared by Kohawks' closer Xavier Cloudy for the second out.
Matthew Chen pinch hit and hit a chopper to the right side that was field by the Kohawks' first baseman who threw to Cloudy covering the bag in time to end the game.Â
* Amherst had six hits in the loss. Orridge was 2 for 2 with a walk. In his final three games in Florida, Orridge went 9 for 10 with 2 walks.Â
