SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Western New England baseball team scored two runs in the third and four in the fourth Wednesday en route to an 8-4 win over Amherst College at the Golden Bears' Trelease Park.
The Mammoths fell to 6-7 on the season while WNEU improved to 9-6. Amherst is set to host NESCAC West Division rival Middlebury Friday at 4 p.m. for the opener of divisional play.Â
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first Wednesday as
Tyler McCord rocketed a double to left center with one ut and scored on an RBI-single to center field off the bat of
Jack Sampedro.
* Down 7-1, the Mammoths rallied for two runs in the sixth.
Charlie LaFreniere and
Justin Orridge opened the frame with back-to-back singles. After an out,
Ben Smith worked a walk to load the bases. With two outs and the sacks still full,
Jack Boyle drew an RBI-walk. McCord then ground softly to center for an RBI-single before the final out was recorded.Â
* That would be as close as the Mammoths came. They did add a run in the eighth when with two outs and no one on, Boyle doubled and McCord lined an RBI-single to left to account for the final score.Â
BY THE NUMBERS:

Matt Tabet took the loss, tossing four innings and allowing nine hits and seven runs, only three of which were earned.Â
* Amherst outhit its host, 11-10. McCord was 3 or 4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.Â
