Mammoths downed by Rowan, 13-7

DAVENPORT, Fl. -- Despite a 4 for 5 day from Tyler McCord and 3 RBIs from A.J. Zaccareo Monday, the Amherst College baseball team dropped a 13-7 decision to Rowan University on Field 4 at Northeast Regional Park. 

The Mammoths fell to 3-4 overall while te Profs improved to 9-1. Amherst will take on Southern Maine Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at te Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Fla. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Down 1-0 after the top of the first, Amherst responded with three runs in its half to take a two-run lead. Jack Boyle led off with a single to right, stole second and took third on an errant pick-off throw at second. Leo Foust scored the Mammoths' lead-off hitter with a single down the right-field line. Jack Sampedro drew a walk and then, after an out, McCord scored Foust with an RBI-single to center. Charlie LaFreniere then scored Sampedro with a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead. 

* Rowan countered with three runs in the third, four runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to build a 9-3 lead. 

* The Mammoths got one back. Sampedro, McCord and LaFreniere singled to load the bases with one out. Zaccareo came through with a chopper to the left side tat was fielded but with no play at any base. Sampedro scored on the RBI-single for a 9-4 lead. 

* Down 12-4, Amherst rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Boyle drew a lead-off walk and stole second. With two outs, Boyle scored when McIntyre lined an RBI-single to right. McCord followed with a single to center and LaFreniere walked to load the bases. Zaccareo came through with a two-run single up the middle to make it 12-7.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst out hit Rowan, 14-12, in the loss. 

* Naveen Narayanan started and went four innings, allowing eight runs, five earned. He fell to 0-2.
