Chae's performance hurls Mammoths past Southern Maine, 7-5

AUBURNDALE, Fla. --  Sophomore right-hander Yoon Chae made the most of his first collegiate start Tuesday, hurling 6 2/3 spectacular innings as the Amherst College baseball team held on to defeat the University of Southern Maine, on Field #6 of the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

Amherst evened its record at 4-4 on te season. The Mammoths are off Wednesday but take on highly-ranked Babson College Thursday morning at 9 back at Lake Myrtle.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jack Sampedro singled to center with two outs and came all the way around to score when Ryan McIntyre's high fly to right field was dropped for an error.

* The Mammoths made it 2-0 in the second when Ben Smith crushed a long home run down the left-field line for a solo shot that made it 2-0.

* Three more runs in the fourth game Amherst a 5-0 lead. Justin Orridge had the only Amherst hit in the fame, but some walks, a hit batsmen, a wild pitch and a two-run error help the Mammoths build a comfortable lead.

*  In the meantime, Chae was using a nice combination of his fastball, curve and slider to keep USM off balance. The young righty allowed a lead-off double and then a walk in the first before retiring seven straight batters. He allowed a one-out single in the third but batterymate Smith gunned down a runner trying to steal to end the frame.

* Chae came out with two outs in the bottom of the seventh having allowed just one run on six hits. He walked two and fanned six batters.

* Amherst added two runs in the top of the seventh to build its lead to 7-1. With two outs and runners on first and second, the speedy Jack Boyle took off for third and scored wen Tyler McCord ripped a single right to the spot the Husky third sacker was stationed before he moved to cover the bag. Charlie LaFreniere followed by ripping a liner through the right side of the infield for an RBI-single.

* USM made things too close for comfort in the 9th, scoring four times. Amherst southpaw Tyson Luna came on and put out the fire, retiring te final two batters he faced with the tying run at the plate to earn is first save.
