#5 MIT fends off #17 Amherst, 164-121, in dual meet finale

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Amherst College men's swimming and diving team closed out the dual meet season with a 164-121 loss to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at the Zesiger Center.

The reigning NEWMAC champion Engineers, ranked fifth in the nation in the latest CSCAA Division III poll, concluded their dual meet season at 4-5, while the 17th-ranked Mammoths finished the dual meet season at 4-2.

The Mammoths now turn their attention to the championship season with the NESCAC Championships coming up from February 20–23 at Middlebury College.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths opened the meet with a thrilling victory in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of senior Andrew Yuen, junior Fynlan Nadel, senior Jaden Olson and junior Ethan Van De Water touched first in 1:32.25, narrowly edging out MIT's top relay squad by .05 seconds.

* First-year Charlie McMillan continued Amherst's early momentum, taking the top spot in the 1000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 9:45.62, pulling away late in the race to finish nearly eight seconds ahead of his closest competitor and claim his first collegiate win in the 1000 free.

* In the 200-yard freestyle, senior Gabriele Lunardi surged to victory, stopping the clock in 1:42.47 for his first collegiate win in the 200 free in his first start of the season in the event.

* Senior Tor Metelmann and sophomore Henry Liu captured the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke. Metelmann touched in 56.80 seconds to win the event for the second time this season while Liu was just behind.

* Olson delivered another highlight for Amherst in the 100-yard butterfly, where he posted a time of 49.33 seconds to claim a commanding win, finishing over a second ahead of the field for his fourth win of the season in the event.

* On the diving boards, first-year Tyler Palm won the three-meter dive with an 11-dive score of 401.70 points.
