Mammoths skate past Curry on the road, 3-0

CANTON, Mass. -- The Amherst  College women's hockey team put together a complete, disciplined performance on the road Friday night, earning a 3-0 shutout victory over Curry in a game defined by steady pressure, timely scoring, and strong defensive execution.

After a scoreless first period that featured end-to-end action and several close chances, the Mammoths broke through in the second and never looked back, adding two more goals in the third to secure the win.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The game began with both teams testing each other's pace and physicality. Curry won the opening face-off and generated the first look of the night, sending a shot wide just over a minute in. Amherst answered quickly with a series of offensive zone opportunities, as Emily Hohmann, Gretchen Dann, Ayla Abban, and Clare O'Connor all recorded early attempts on net. Despite the back-and-forth play, both goalies were sharp from the start. Natalie Stott, starting in goal for Amherst, made a handful of clean saves as Curry pressed in the opening minutes, while Curry's Coriann Hoag stood tall through a busy first frame.

* Amherst briefly found itself shorthanded just over two minutes in after a too-many-players penalty. Still, the penalty kill unit responded with composed defensive play, blocking shots and limiting Curry to harmless attempts from the perimeter. Once back at even strength, the Mammoths continued to push the pace, firing several shots on goal and creating congestion in front of the net. While Amherst controlled stretches of play and began to tilt the ice in its favor, the first period ended scoreless, with both teams locked in a 0-0 stalemate after twenty minutes.

* The tone of the game shifted in the second period as Amherst's sustained offensive pressure began to make an impact. After several more chances early in the frame, Curry was called for tripping at the 2:23 mark, giving Amherst its first power play of the night. Although the Mammoths were unable to convert on that initial opportunity, their confidence and puck movement continued to build. Stott remained steady in goal as Curry tried to counter, turning aside a series of shots and maintaining the deadlock.

* Mid-way through the period, Amherst found another opportunity with the man advantage when Curry was whistled for interference. This time, the Mammoths made it count. At 15:25, Marie-Eve Marleau delivered the breakthrough goal, tipping in a power-play marker off assists from Maeve Reynolds and Bea Flynn. The goal, Marleau's third of the season, gave Amherst a 1-0 lead and proved to be the eventual game-winner. The Mammoths carried the momentum into the final minutes of the period, maintaining pressure in the offensive zone and keeping Curry on its heels as the second came to a close.

* Entering the third with a slim one-goal edge, Amherst wasted no time in expanding its lead. Just 5:42 into the period, Calleigh Brown finished off a well-timed feed from Sami Lester to double the Mammoths' advantage. The even-strength goal shifted complete control to Amherst and forced Curry to take more risks pushing forward.

* Only a few minutes later, Amherst struck again. At the 8:07 mark, Natalie Fu netted her first goal of the season, converting a pass from Malaya Anaba to make it 3-0. The goal capped off a dominant stretch for the Mammoths, who were firing from all angles and keeping consistent pressure in Curry's end. Amherst continued to generate chances throughout the remainder of the period, even hitting the post once late in the frame. At the same time, the defense stayed structurally sound, clearing rebounds and blocking shots.

* Curry had a final opportunity to get on the board during a late power play, but Amherst's penalty killers stepped up once again. Stott stood firm in the crease, tracking the puck well and denying any second-chance opportunities. When the final horn sounded, the Mammoths had secured a convincing 3-0 shutout victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Stott finished the night with 15 saves in a composed, confident performance, earning the clean sheet. Maeve Reynolds was a key presence throughout the game, going 16-8 in the face-off circle and playing a critical role in setting up the opening goal. Amherst's defensive unit also played a significant part in the win, blocking shots, winning board battles, and helping keep Curry off the scoreboard.
