#2 Mammoths skate to 1-1 tie, win shootout over Williams in season opener

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Senior Maeve Reynolds scored in regulation -- and in the shootout -- Friday night as the defending NESCAC champion and No. 2-ranked  Amherst College women's hockey team opened their season  with a tightly contested 1–1 result against rival Williams at Lansing Chapman Rink.

The Mammoths won the shootout, 1-0, as Reynolds scored the lone goal for either side. Eph goalie Erin Pye turned aside eight shots in the first period, 13 in the second, 22 in the third and eight during the five-minute overtime session to finish with 51. Mammoth senior goaltender Natalie Stott made 28 stops.

The Mammoths will look to build on their strong opening-night effort as they continue their push for another postseason run. They will face the Ephs again Saturday at 3 PM.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst struck first just 3:28 into the opening period, when Reynolds buried the season's first goal off crisp assists from Marie-Eve Marleau and Clare O'Connor to give the Mammoths an early edge.

* Williams answered late in the frame on the power play at 16:49, as Jaelyn Keiver converted from the slot with help from Claire Murphy and Lucie Bond, sending the game into intermission tied 1-1.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Defense and goaltending defined the rest of the night, with neither side able to break through in regulation or overtime. Amherst captain Emily Hohmann led the Mammoths with 6 blocked shots
and Bea Flynn added another 4. Reynolds also tallied an impressive 17 face-off wins, gaining possession for the Mammoths.

With a deep roster of returners from last year's national championship appearance, Amherst showed early signs of the cohesion Head coach Jeff Matthews emphasized entering the season. "The goal is just to stay together and keep building and trying to get better until your very last game," Matthews said.
