A pair of sophomores,
Marek Hill of the football team and
Hannah Stephenson of the women's cross country team, have been named Amherst's Student-Athletes of the Month for September.
Stephenson has set the pace for the Mammoths on the cross country trails, winning both races that Amherst competed in during the month of September.
Stephenson opened the season by winning the Little Three Championships, completing the 4k course on Amherst's campus in 14:49.0 to win by nine seconds and top the field of 51 runners. She followed that up by winning the Cardinal Invitational two weeks later at Wesleyan, finishing in 20:45.0, her collegiate best 6k time, to pace a field of 135 runners.
The Farmington, Connecticut, native was named the Division III Women National Athlete of the Week by the USTFCCCA after her Little Three performance. Stephenson earned All-Region honors in cross country and in the 5000m during outdoor track and field season as a rookie last year, as well as All-New England honors in the 3000m during indoor track and field season.
Hill has powered the Mammoths to an impressive start on the gridiron, leading Amherst to a 2-1 record during the month of September.
Hill showcased his dual-threat ability throughout the opening month of the season, throwing for 609 yards and seven touchdowns in three games, while adding 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He was named NESCAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Mammoths to a 23-13 win over Hamilton, completing 25 of 35 pass attempts (71.4 percent) for 236 passing yards and two touchdowns without an interception, as well as 109 rushing yards, including a 57-yard touchdown run. The next week, Hill threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns as the Mammoths toppled Tufts, 30-14, with Amherst's highest offensive output since 2019.
The Oak Park, Illinois, native finished the month of September ranked third in the NESCAC in both passing yards, averaging 203 yards per game, and total offense, averaging 253.3 yards per game.
