The Mammoths battle to victory against Emerson College

AMHERST, Mass – The Amherst College volleyball team fought through four hard sets to bring home a victory on their home court tonight (19-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21). 

After winning three straight sets in their matchup against Emerson College tonight, the Mammoths will look to continue their momentum against Wellesley College tomorrow, October 25th, at 2 pm. The Mammoths will play at home, in LeFrak Gymnasium, and will honor their senior class prior to the start of the match.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

* Amherst started the first set on a good foot with kills from Chideraa Ngwadom and Gabrielle Hines giving them the lead, but Emerson kept themselves in the set, never trailing by more than three. With the score tied at 12-12, the Lions took their first lead of the set. A block by Sofia Camilo and Ngwadom, and kills from Brielle Renwick and Camilo kept the points coming for the Mammoths, but the Lions took the first set, 25-19.

* The Mammoths came out with commanding offensive power in the second set, winning the first point off a big-time block from Camilo and Ngwadom. Addison Lau had three kills and a service ace to help the Mammoths get out to a 12-3 lead. The Lions scored the next 7 of 8 points to narrow the gap, but kills from Hines and Ngwadom kept Amherst ahead. Another block by Renwick and Hines, and a third ace from Lau in the set, helped them secure the second set, 25-17. 

* Emerson came out with a lead at the beginning of the third set, but the Mammoths remained steady. Two straight kills from Renwick tied the score, 7-7. The two teams traded points through the middle of the set, but a crucial 4-point run gave the Mammoths the lead, 18-13. The Mammoths maintained their momentum, and three service aces from Stella Jacey late in the set allowed the Mammoths to take the set, 25-15.

* The battle continued in the fourth set with both teams trading points. Ngwadom had two early kills to start the scoring for the Mammoths. A service ace from Bailey Reid and a kill from Renwick gave the Mammoths their largest lead of the set, 14-11. Emerson did not relent, going on to score the next 5 of 6 to take the lead, 16-15. A huge solo block from Renwick brought the score back even, 16-16, and the Mammoths kept their momentum through the end of the set, winning the set and the match, 25-21.

BY THE NUMBERS

* First-year Gabrielle Hines notched 13 kills on the night, earning double-digit kills for the first time in her career. 

* First-year Stella Jacey earned 4 aces on the night. The Mammoths racked up 12 aces over the four sets.

* Brielle Renwick led the Mammoths with 4 blocks.
