Trinity College Bantams defeat Amherst Mammoths in three sets

AMHERST, Mass – The Amherst College volleyball team fought hard on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell in straight sets to the Bantams of Trinity College (21-25, 22-25, 22-25).

The Mammoths fall to 5-8 (2-6 NESCAC) and the Bantams move to 11-8 (2-6 NESCAC). The Mammoths will face Emerson College in their next matchup on Friday, October 24th, at 6 pm. The match will take place at LeFrak Gymnasium.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

* The Bantams and the Mammoths traded points through the early part of the first set. Chideraa Ngwadom notched the first kill for the Mammoths. The offensive scoring was continued with two kills by Gabrielle Hines and an ace from Charlotte Rasmussen. Both teams continued to build their momentum, with neither team ever trailing by more than 3 points. With the score at 19-17 in favor of the Bantams, Trinity had a crucial kill and block to give them a 21-17 lead, the largest of the set so far. Sofia Camilo had a kill in an attempt to rally for the Mammoths, but the Bantams took the first set, 25-21.

* Trinity took a commanding lead in the second set, 9-2. The Mammoths stayed strong with Rasmussen, Brielle Renwick, Hines, and Ngwadom all earning kills for their team to narrow the gap. Camilo and Ngwadom also had a critical block. The Bantams were up 23-15 late in the set, but the Mammoths earned the next 7 of 8 points to bring the score to 22-25. The late offensive surge wasn't enough, and the Bantams took the set 25-22.

* The third set was even through the beginning, with both teams scoring a few points at a time. Alexandra Trofort had two kills to help the Mammoths tie the set, 10-10. The teams continued to trade points with the Mammoths scoring off a kill by Ngwadom, and an ace from Addison Lau. Five different Mammoths earned kills for the team late in the set, but the Bantams took the set 25-22.

BY THE NUMBERS

* Ngwadom and Camilo each earned 3 blocks on the night.

* Rasmussen led the Mammoths with 10 kills. Hines had 7.

* Lau led the Mammoths with two service aces in the match.
