AMHERST, Mass – The Amherst College volleyball team fell short this afternoon against Little Three foe, Wesleyan, losing in straight sets (25-16, 31-29, 27-25).
The Mammoths fall to 5-6 on the season (2-4 NESCAC) while the Cardinals move to 14-1 (6-0 NESCAC). The Mammoths will return to LeFrak Gymnasium this Friday, October 17th, at 7pm as they look to get a victory over the Connecticut College Camels.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
* The Mammoths and the Cardinals traded points back and forth through the beginning of the first set, with Sofia Camilo, Charlotte Rasmussen, and Allie McLaughlin all registering kills. Camilo and Brielle Renwick also combined for a block, shutting down the Cardinal offense. Later in the set, the Mammoths held the lead, 14-13, but the Cardinals went on to score the next 9 of 10 points, taking a 19-14 lead. The Mammoths were unable to come back after that, and Wesleyan took the first set, 25-16.
* The second set was a battle for both teams, with the Mammoths forcing the Cardinals to 31 points. McLaughlin had three kills early in the set, and Chideraa Ngwadom earned a kill and a combined block for the Mammoths. With the score tied, 16-16, first-year Addison Lau had a critical kill and got up for another block with Ngwadom. The Mammoths had a 24-20 lead, but Wesleyan did not relent, scoring the next 5 points. The Mammoths looked to end the set with two kills from Camilo, but Wesleyan held strong to take the set, 31-29.
* The final set was another hard-fought battle between the two NESCAC foes. The Mammoths came out to an early 6-1 lead with kills from Rasmussen, Renwick, and McLaughlin. The Cardinals kept the margin narrow and the two teams traded individual points through the middle of the set. Wesleyan took the lead, 21-19, from a 4-point run, but three straight kills from McLaughlin, Camilo, and Ngwadom brought the Mammoths ahead once again, 22-21. Ultimately, the offensive power from the Mammoths wasn't enough, and the Cardinals took the set, 27-25.
