#3 Mammoths cool off #9 Polar Bears, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass.— Goals from sophomores Cara Mancini, Natalie Fu, and first-year Ayla Abban secured the #3-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team's 3-0 shutout over #9 Bowdoin College at Orr Rink Friday night.

The shutout marks the Mammoth goaltender, Natalie Stott's, 31st career shutout. She saved all 19 shots she faced on net.

The Mammoths now holds a nine-game win streak over the Polar Bears and improves their record to 13-3-1 overall, and 6-2-1 for in-conference play.

The Mammoths again hit the ice for a NESCAC rematch against Bowdoin at 3 p.m. tomorrow (Feb. 1) at Orr Rink.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Amherst forward Mancini intercepted the puck along the left boards in Bowdoin's zone, skated behind the net, and netted a wrist shot from the right face-off circle into the top corner, securing the Mammoths' first goal at 5:20 into the match.
  • Mammoth Maeve Reynolds won the face-off in Bowdoin's zone, where the puck was then sent to Abban, who sent a shot that slipped through the pads of the Polar Bears goaltender, Sarah Peterson, finding the back of the net with 1:56 remaining in the first period.
  • After a clearing attempt by Bowdoin, Emily Hohmann regained possession and sent the puck back to Abban near the blue line, who then fed it to Fu. Fu skated toward the right post, shifted to her backhand, and buried the puck into the left side of the net with 5:55 remaining in the second period.
  • With less than 20 seconds left in regulation and Bowdoin on a 6-on-4 advantage, Polar Bear Emma Merrill fed a cross-point pass to teammate Luna Lu, but Stott made the save. Moments later, Bowdoin's Gia Massari fired a shot from the left face-off circle, only for Amherst's Gretchen Dann to block it. A late flurry of shots around the net that was saved and cleared by Stott led the Mammoth's defense to make the clear and secure the shutout victory.
